J/133 & J/24s Silver @ Barbados Sailing Week
(Bridgetown, Barbados)- The Barbados Cruising Club welcomed sailors from near and far across the Caribbean to their gorgeous corner of the Earth. Barbados is the easternmost of the Windward Islands, and sailors love the long weekend of “fun in the sun”! The week-long regatta started with the local Coastal Offshore Races, then concluded with the famous Mt. Gay Round Barbados Race.
CSA Racing
In the CSA Racing division of eleven boats, David Sharman’s team of Canadian refugees from their frigid Arctic weather managed to pull off a silver medal in the CSA Racing Division on their well-traveled war horse- the J/133 BELLA J. They compiled an enviable record in their six-race series, starting off with three deuces, then closing with a 1-2-1 for 8 pts net! Incredibly, despite that stunning scoreline of two bullets and four deuces, they lost the gold medal by a single point! Long-time veteran Peter Lewis and his fun-loving crew from Barbados sailed to a respectable fifth place on their J/121 WHISTLER.
J/24 Class Domination
The J/24 sailors have been sailing off Barbados for over 36 years! That’s an astounding and enviable track record for any one-design class in the Caribbean Islands. This year, the regatta organizers dumped them into the CSA Cruising Division, much to the disappointment of all of the cruising sailors! Hahaha. Not surprisingly, the talented cast of J/24 veterans ran amok in the cruising division like foxes in a hen house! Yikes! Winning was the well-coached students at the Wet & Salty Sailing School racing their J/24 FADEAWAY. The “kids” sailed an awesome regatta, posting three bullets, a deuce, and two treys to win with 8 pts net. Their stablemates on the J/24 GLORY DAZE, led by skipper Gus Reader, also posted all podium finishes (four deuces & one third) for 10 pts net. Then, Cyril Lecrenay’s famous (or infamous??) cast of characters on BUNGA-BUNGA took fifth place despite winning 3 races! Unfortunately, they couldn’t sail their last two races and took two DNCs.
